Magpie: Her mother (brown & white Shetland pony) came to the rescue on May 11th. She had a horrible case of mastitis. The following day (May 12th) we took her to the vet for treatment. She received antibiotics and additional medication, which at that time we confirmed that she was pregnant and the baby was still alive. One week later (May 19th), Magpie was born. That morning both mother and baby were taken to the vet and found that the mother had no milk, only blood in her udder instead of milk. Therefore, we began providing Magpie bottles of Colostrums and an IV of platelets, which cost about $700. At the time we left both mother and baby together for the next 24 hours, however, the milk was so toxic that we had to separate them, so the baby could survive. Magpie was then fed via bottle every 2 hours, which will need to occur for the next four months.
Update: We had a cold snap in May and had to move her into our home so she could survive; To the right we have photos during this crucial time and how she is doing now.. |
